Beyond the Populist Hype Workshop & Call for Papers

January 13, 2021 @ 8:00 am January 15, 2021 @ 5:00 pm

From 13 till 15 January CISRUL is hosting an online workshop bringing together scholars working on populism and related themes to reflect on their own work and its relation to populist hype.

Check out the links below for the full schedule and the book of participants’ abstracts. To join as an audience member please use the registration form.

CISRUL is excited to announce a workshop on populism in January 2021! The workshop will focus on the Populist Hype that enthralled many Western countries in recent years. While the populist wave may have ebbed away and appear like a relict of a distant past, many populists such as Donald Trump or Rodrigo Duterte are still in office.

Has the hype been justified? Has it created a feedback loop that unnessarily exaggerates the populist phenomenon? The workshop will discuss these and other questions related to the uses and misuses of the term populism. We invite critical reflection on populist discourse as well as on the public and academic discourse about populism from all disciplines and world regions.

The workshop will take place on 14 – 15 January 2021 at the University of Aberdeen featuring keynotes by Aurelien Mondon (University of Bath), Bice Maiguashca (University of Exeter), Christopher Bickerton (University of Cambridge).

All information can be found on the event page. The call for abstracts is open until 12 July 2020!
