CISRUL welcomes PhD projects on any political concepts, and in any of our disciplines: Anthropology, Divinity, Economics, Education, English, Film & Visual Culture, French & Francophone Studies, Geography & Environment, German, History, Law, Philosophy, Politics & International Relations, Sociology, and Spanish & Latin American Studies.

Our supervisors are listed here. Please feel free to contact any of them to discuss an idea you have for a PhD. We may also consider adding other Aberdeen University staff to your supervisory team.

We also welcome enquiries about how to fund a PhD at CISRUL. The following are some options:

Those considering studying an interdisciplinary PhD in Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law, hosted by the School of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture, are eligible for a New King’s Studentship (deadline for applying for Uni admission 12 May 2023).

CISRUL is advertising its own PhD studentships for study either in our interdisciplinary PhD in Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law, or for a PhD in any of our disciplines. The application deadline is 15 May 2023.

The following are external funding programmes, although the deadlines have passed for 2023:

ESRC Scottish Graduate School Competition (for anyone in the social sciences)

AHRC Scottish Graduate School Competition (for anyone in the arts and humanities)

Carnegie Trust PhD Scholarship (for those with a 1st class undergraduate degree from a Scottish university)
