Shao-Chi Kuo Presents PhD Research on ‘Faithful disobedience in the Land of Heaven: Wang Yi and Early Rain Covenant Church’s pursuit of a civil society in China’
January 28 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am
On Wednesday 28 January at 10-11.30am in Taylor A08 and on Teams, CISRUL PhD candidate Shao-Chi (Gerry) Kuo will share his PhD research on ‘Faithful disobedience in the Land of Heaven: Wang Yi and Early Rain Covenant Church’s pursuit of a civil society in China.’ Kuo’s study explores the public theological significance of Wang Yi and the Early Rain Covenant Church’s faithful disobedience. The first part traces Wang’s intellectual trajectory from right-wing conservative civil rights lawyer to Christian convert, his subsequent transition to full-time house church pastor, culminating in his arrest in 2018. It interprets Wang’s constitutionalist political resistance and its anti-scholar-official emancipation concerns through the lens of the aesthetics and poetry of post-June Fourth dissidents. It then examines the dynamic evolution of Wang’s understanding of the public mission of Chinese house churches, shaped by the competing influences of conservative constitutionalism, neo-Calvinism, and the house church’s tradition of martyrdom.
